Cars and motorcycles
Are you entering the Netherlands with a car or motorcycle? And do you have a valid vehicle registration in your country of residence? In that case you do not need to report to Customs. You can take your car or motorcycle over the border and use it in the Netherlands without paying tax.
Do you not live in the Netherlands?
Do you not live in the Netherlands? In that case you can use this car or motorcycle for a maximum of 6 months in the Netherlands without being liable for tax. Do you want to use the car or motorcycle in the Netherlands for longer? And do you live in the European Union (EU)? In that case you must file a private motor vehicle and motorcycle tax (BPM) declaration.
(Do you live outside of the European Union? If so you must make a Customs declaration and file a BPM return.)
Do you live in the Netherlands?
Are you travelling in the Netherlands with a car or motorcycle borrowed, rented or leased abroad? And do you live in the Netherlands? In that case you will need to apply for the exemption for BPM and motor vehicle tax (MRB) for short-term use before you arrive in the Netherlands.
