What can I do if I'm not in agreement with the amount of payable tax?
If you do not agree with the tax on imports that you must pay for goods which you received from abroad, please contact your postal or courier service. They made a Customs declaration for you. They can:
- submit a request for review to us
- submit a request for a refund of tax paid to us
You can also apply for a refund of tax paid or submit a request for review yourself
Do you wish to request a refund of taxes paid or submit a request for review yourself? You then need to authorise your post or courier service.
We can only process your letter of objection (request for review) / request for a refund of the tax paid on imports if you add the 2 following annexes:
- written authorisation from the postal or courier company
(Your postal or courier company submitted a Customs declaration for you. You wish to reclaim the tax paid or submit a request for review of the declaration. With the authorisation of your postal or courier service they will grant you permission for that.)
- a copy of the invoice of the postal or courier service
Please write in your letter:
- why you do not agree with the amount of tax
- the declaration number of the declaration at Customs
- your name, address and signature
Send in on time
Send your letter as soon as possible to:
Customs Administration of the Netherlands

Your appeal must be received by us: within 6 weeks of the date of the payment request (= the statement of tax owed as set out on the Customs declaration).
For an application for the refund of taxes paid, longer time limits apply, depending on the type of request. In general, your request must be received by us: within 3 years of the date of the payment request (= the statement of tax owed as set out on the Customs declaration).
However, shorter terms for specific situations may apply (three months or a year). Your postal or courier service can give you more information about this.
