Consequences for your social security
If you live in the Netherlands, you are almost always compulsorily covered by the Dutch national insurances schemes General Old Age Pensions Act, (AOW), Surviving Dependence Act (Anw), General Child Benefit Act (AKW), Exceptional Medical Expenses Act (AWBZ), and the Healthcare Insurance Act (Zorgverkekeringswet). If you also work in the Netherlands, you are also covered by the employee insurance schemes, such as the Unemployment Insurance Act (WW) and Sickness Benefits Act (ZW). If you are going to work abroad for an employer who is established there, you are, in principle, no longer compulsorily insured in the Netherlands. The general rule is that you are insured in the country you work in.
Social security when transferred temporarily
Do you work in the Netherlands and are you being transferred temporarily to another country by your employer? In that case, the Dutch national insurance schemes may still apply under certain conditions. Do the Dutch national insurance schemes no longer apply? In that case, it will usually be possible to continue certain insurances on a voluntary basis. Therefore, it is important that for transfers abroad, temporary or otherwise, you look into the consequences for your social security (and those for the family members who come with you) prior to the transfer.
