BPM return when applying for a Dutch licence plate
You must file a BPM return (BPM is the Private Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Tax) when applying for a Dutch licence plate (Nederlands kenteken).
First, have your vehicle inspected by the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority). After the inspection, file a BPM return. Once you have filed the return, you will receive the vehicle registration certificate (kentekenbewijs) by post.
Keep the following information ready
- The vehicle identification number (Voertuigidentificatienummer - VIN or chassisnummer).
- The Dutch net list price (netto-catalogusprijs) of the vehicle on the date of first admission (datum eerste toelating), including any options or accessories. You can find this information by searching online for the vehicle details.
Conditions for filing a BPM return online
You can file your BPM return online if you meet all of the following conditions:
- You are a private individual or you have a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak).
- You had your vehicle inspected by the RDW yourself, and you are filing the BPM return yourself.
- You have a DigiD (Dutch digital ID).
- You are filing the return for a car, campervan or motorcycle.
- You use the fixed table (only available in Dutch) to calculate the depreciation (afschrijving).
- You do not have a BPM exemption (vrijstellingen bpm - only available in Dutch) for the vehicle.
You cannot file a BPM return online in the following cases
- You do not meet the conditions listed above.
- You want to file a return BPM using a price list (only available in Dutch) or a valuation report (only available in Dutch).
- You want to file a return because your vehicle has been modified and you want to offset the BPM you already paid.
In these cases, you must file a BPM return with the paper form (Aangifte, melding of opgaaf bpm - only available in Dutch).
Please note!
You can only file a BPM return online after we have received the inspection data from the RDW (keuringsgegevens). This can take up to 5 working days.
If we have not yet received the data, you will see an error message (foutmelding) saying that no data was found for your VIN (Voertuigidentificatienummer - VIN or chassisnummer). In that case, please try again later.
