Rent benefit if someone does not live at home for more than 1 year

Is your benefits partner or co-resident staying in a nursing home or psychiatric hospital, or are they detained for more than 1 year? If this person is still registered at your home address, you can ask us not to count them towards the rent benefit. This is also possible if you already know that this person will not be living at home for more than 1 year. We will not include this person from the moment they are no longer living at home.

Notify us

If you don't receive rent benefit, you must first apply for it. Afterwards, inform us about your special situation with the form Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag (Request Special Situation Rent Benefit, only available in Dutch).

You can submit a request up to 5 years after the year it applies to.

I am detained for longer than 1 year

Are you detained for longer than 1 year and do you receive rent benefit? You are not eligible for rent benefit anymore and must cancel it yourself (only available in Dutch). If your benefits partner or co-resident still lives in your rental home, they can still apply for rent benefit. Read more about this at Ik word gedetineerd (I am being detained, only available in Dutch).
