I live in a rented house
If you live in a rented home in the Netherlands, you may be entitled to rent benefit. This is a contribution towards your rental costs.
Conditions for the rent benefit
These are the conditions for you and your possible benefit partner:
- Your rent is not too high.
- You rent an independent living space.
- You and the landlord have a rental agreement.
- Your income, and that of your benefit partner and co-residents, is not too high.
- Your assets, and those of your benefit partner and co-residents, are not too high.
- You live in the Netherlands.
- You and the other residents are registered at your home address with the municipality.
- Your co-resident or benefit partner is not the owner of the home.
- You, your benefit partner and your co-residents aged 18 years or older have the Dutch nationality or are legally residing in the Netherlands.
- You are 18 years or older. You pay the rent and can prove this with bank statements.
Special circumstances for rent benefit
The rules may be different in the following situations:
- Your rent has become too high. Can you keep your rent benefit?
- You are co-parenting (only available in Dutch)
- You are under 18
- You have been living away from home for more than 1 year
- You receive care at home
- You have a large household
- Someone in your household is disabled, and your home is adapted
- You are disabled and under 21
- You are under 21 and continue to live in your parental home after the death of your parent(s) (only available in Dutch)
- You receive a back payment of income or a lump sum
- You receive compensation (only available in Dutch)
Applying for benefits yourself

Report changes on time
Please notify us of any changes in your situation that may impact our calculation of your benefits. This may be the case if your income changes, if your rent goes up (or down) and so on. In those cases, you must notify us. Information about how to do this can be found under I want to submit a change.
