I am renting a more expensive home due to a large household
Do you have a household of 8 or more people, and do you rent a more expensive home as a result? Then you can still receive rent benefit.
However, whether you receive rent benefit and how much depends on your income, your family composition and your rent, among other things. You always pay part of the rent yourself. Make a test calculation to find out much rent benefit you can receive.

Things worked differently before 2026
If your rent was higher than the rent threshold, you did not receive rent benefit. But did you have a household of 8 or more people? If the rent of your home was too high for rent benefit, you could still get rent benefit. The home did have to be suited for a large family. You were required to inform us of your situation using the Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag form (Request special situation rent benefit).
We calculate your rent benefit based on the maximum calculation rent. This means that you don’t get rent benefit for the part of the rent that exceeds this amount.
Applying for rent benefit for 2025?
First apply for rent benefit for 2025 using Mijn toeslagen (only available in Dutch). You can do this until 31 December 2026. Afterwards, inform us of your special situation using the Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag form (only available in Dutch).
While we assess your special situation, you may already receive a decision that has not yet taken your special situation into account. It may also be a rejection of your request. If, after assessing your special situation, it appears that you are entitled to rent benefit, you will receive a new decision.
Did we not take your special situation into account yet? Let us know using the Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag form. We will then check if you can still receive rent benefit.
You can submit a request up to 5 years after the year the request relates to.
