What are the rent thresholds for rent benefit?
From 2026, your rent can no longer be too high for rent benefit. How much rent benefit you receive depends on your income, your family composition and your rent, among other things. You always pay part of the rent yourself.
In 2026, the rent thresholds will still be used when calculating the rent benefit amount. Read more about this at Hoeveel huurtoeslag kan ik krijgen? (How much rent benefit can I receive?) (Only availabe in Dutch).
Do you not get rent benefit yet? You may be able to receive it in 2026. Make a test calculation to see how much rent benefit you can get in 2026.

Before 2026, there were rent thresholds
Was your rent higher than the rent threshold? Until the end of 2025, this meant that you could not receive rent benefit. There were 2 rent thresholds:
- A rent threshold for households with at least 1 resident who was 23 years or older
- A rent threshold for households where everyone was younger than 23
Rent threshold for residents 23 years and older
These also apply if 1 resident is 23 years or older. Or if any of you have a resident (foster) child.
