Someone in my household has a disability and we are under 21 years

Are all of you under 21 years of age? You will usually receive less rent benefit than someone who is 21 or older. However, if someone in your household has a disability and you are renting a more expensive home as a result, then you can receive more rent benefit. You must report your situation to us for that.

How do I report my situation?

You can report your situation to us using the Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag form (Request special situation sent benefit, only available in Dutch). We will then check if you can get more rent benefit.

If you don't receive rent benefit yet

First apply for rent benefit using Mijn toeslagen (only available in Dutch). Afterwards, inform us of your situation by completing the Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag form.

While we assess your special situation, you may already receive a letter in which we have not yet taken your situation into account. If, after assessing your special situation, it appears that you are entitled to (more) rent benefit, you will receive a new letter.

Things worked differently before 2026

Until the end of 2025, the age threshold for higher benefits was 23 years instead of 21. You also did not receive rent benefit if your rent was higher than the rent threshold for young people up to the age of 23. However, you could receive rent benefit if someone in your household had a disability, and everyone was younger than 23. The rent in 2025 could not be higher than €900.07.

Still apply for rent benefit for 2025?

Did you not receive rent benefit in 2025? But do you think that you are entitled to it because someone in your household had a disability, and you were all younger than 23 years in 2025? First apply for rent benefit for 2025 using Mijn toeslagen. You can do this until 31 December 2026.

Afterwards, report your special situation to us trhough the form Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag. While we assess your special situation, you may already receive a decision in which we have not yet taken your special situation into account. This may also be a rejection of your application.

If, after assessing your special situation, it appears that you are entitled to rent benefit, you will receive a new letter.

And did we not take your situation into account yet? Let us know with the form Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag. We will then adjust the amount of your rent benefit.

You can submit a request until 5 years after the year for which you received rent benefit.

Are you unable to submit a request within 5 years because you will only receive the final calculation after a few years? Then you will have more time. You can submit your request until 1 year after you have received the final calculation.
