Rent benefit if your home has been adapted because of a disability
Did you adapt your home because you, your benefit partner or co-resident has a disability? And do you pay more rent as a result? Then you can still get rent benefit. From 2026, you are also no longer required to report this to us.
However, whether you receive rent benefit and what the amount will be depends on your income, family composition and your rent, among other things. You always pay part of the rent yourself.
Do you want to know how much rent benefit you can receive?
Make a test calculation(only available in Dutch)
Things worked differently until the end of 2025
If your rent was higher than the rent threshold, you did not receive rent benefit. If your home was adapted because you, your benefits partner, or co-resident was disabled, you could receive rent benefit but you had to submit a separate request for this.
Applying for rent benefit for 2025
Can you still get rent benefit for 2025? Then you must do 2 things:
- First apply for rent benefit using Mijn toeslagen (only available in Dutch). Do not wait too long. You can apply until 31 December 2026.
- Afterwards, let us know that your home was adapted because of a disability. You can use the form Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag (Request special situation rent benefit, only available in Dutch) for this.
You must also include proof. You can find the exact requirements in the explanatory notes in the form. This includes:
- Proof that special care is needed (for example, a CIZ indication)
- Proof of the adaptations to your home (for example, a subsidy decision)
You will receive multiple letters from us
After you have applied for rent benefit, you will first receive a decision stating that you cannot get rent benefit because your rent is too high. However, once we have received the form Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag from you, we will check whether you may receive rent benefit. Are you entitled to rent benefit? Then you will receive a new decision telling you how much you will get. We calculate your rent benefit for 2025 based on a rent of €900,07.
You can find the amounts for the preceding years on the page What are the rent thresholds for rent benefit?
Until what date can I inform you that my home was adapted because of a disability?
Do this as quickly as possible, but no later than 5 years after the year your application relates to. You can only do this if you have already applied for rent benefit for that year. If you have not applied yet, check until what date you can apply for rent benefit (only available in Dutch).
Did you live in a disability adapted home before 2025?
And did you already receive rent benefit? If you informed us about the situation at the time, you may have received an additional amount of rent benefit. Did you not inform us about the adapted home yet, then you can still do this for your rent benefit for 2021 and later years. We will then check if you are entitled to the additional amount.
Were you single, or did someone in your home have the state pension age (AOW-leeftijd)? In that case, you already received the additional rent benefit and you do not need to take action.
