Living in an adapted home due to a disability
If you, your benefits partner or co-resident have a disability and live in an adapted home because of it, you may be eligible for higher rent benefit. Alternatively, you may be able to receive rent benefit even if your rent exceeds the maximum allowed amount.
My rent is lower than the maximum rent for rent benefit
If your rent in 2025 is lower than €900.07, you could receive a higher amount of rent benefit than someone who does not live in an adapted home.
My rent is higher than the maximum rent for rent benefit
If your rent in 2025 is higher than €900.07, you may still be eligible for rent benefit. However, the rent benefit is only calculated based on the €900.07 threshold.
Before 2025, different maximum rents applied.
You may already be receiving the extra rent benefit
If you are single or someone in your household has reached the state pension age, you are already receiving the extra rent benefit and do not need to apply for anything.
How do I report this?
If you are not currently receiving rent benefit yet, apply for it using Mijn toeslagen (only available in Dutch). Report your special situation using the 'Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag' form (Request Special Situation Rent Benefit, only available in Dutch).
While we assess your special situation, you may already receive a decision that does not take your special situation into account. It could also be rejection of your application. If the assessment of your special situation shows that you are entitled to rent benefit, you will receive a new decision.
If you already receive rent benefit without us taking into account your special situation, you need to report this with the 'Verzoek bijzondere situatie huurtoeslag' form. We will then adjust your rent benefit accordingly.
You can submit a request up to 5 years after the year it applies to.
Include proof
Include copies of the following 2 documents:
- The indication decision from the Centrum Indicatiestelling Zorg (CIZ). This document states that you, your partner, or co-resident have a Wlz-indication ('Wet langdurige zorg').
Alternatively, a copy of the indication for home adaptations under the 'Wet voorzieningen gehandicapten' (Wvg) or the 'Wet Maatschappelijke Ondersteuning' (Wmo).
You can also include a Wmo-indication for your moving expenses allowance.
- A subsidy decision. This is proof that the home was either built or adapted for a person with a disability, with funding from the Wvg/Wmo or a similar scheme. You can request this from your landlord.
You may also include a statement from the housing corporation stating that the home was adapted due to a disability.
A statement from a GP or any other declaration is not valid.
