Can you get healthcare benefit if you live abroad?
If you live in a country outside the Netherlands, you may still be eligible for healthcare benefit. This depends on how you are insured for your healthcare costs.
Check your situation
-
You have Dutch health insurance
If you live abroad, you may still be required to have Dutch health insurance. In that case, you can get healthcare benefit. Some of the situations in which this applies are:
- You are employed by a Dutch employer
- You work for the Dutch government
- You are seconded by a Dutch employer
- You are temporarily studying abroad

You are insured through the CAK
Are you insured for healthcare costs abroad through the CAK in the Netherlands? In that case, you can get healthcare benefit. You are not required to have Dutch health insurance.
You are required to insure yourself through the CAK if, for example, you get a pension from the Netherlands and live in the EU or another treaty country. For more information, check the website of the CAK.
-
You are co-insured through the CAK
Did your partner, parent, or another family member co-insure you through the CAK in the Netherlands? In that case, you can also get healthcare benefit. You are not required to have Dutch health insurance.
You can be co-insured through the CAK if you do not have an income and live in the EU or another treaty country. For more information, check the website of the CAK.
Does 1 of these situations apply to you and do you also meet the other conditions? Then you can get healthcare benefit.
Do you also get healthcare benefits for your benefits partner?
If your benefits partner also meets the above-mentioned conditions, you will get healthcare benefit together.
If you are unable to get healthcare benefit for your benefits partner, you will get half of the amount you would normally get for 2 persons. Your benefits partner's income still counts when determining the healthcare benefit amount.
How much healthcare benefit will I get?
Make a test calculation (only available in Dutch) to find out how much healthcare benefit you can get.
Please note!
Do you live abroad and are you insured for your healthcare costs through the CAK in the Netherlands? When calculating your healthcare benefit, we take into account the healthcare costs of the country where you live. If these costs are lower than in the Netherlands, you will get less healthcare benefit compared to someone living in the Netherlands. This is called the country of residence factor (woonlandfactor). The test calculation automatically takes this into account.
You can check the country of residence factor in your situation on the website of the CAK.
